Guizhou Echo |
It is time for the annual World Animal Day. Every year on this day, a variety of events take place around the world to make the public aware of the unique relationship between people and animals. To love, respect, and live in harmony with animals. This year's theme for World Animal Day is "A Shared Planet", so let's learn about these four kinds of protected animals that live with us in Guizhou.
Guizhou Golden Monkeys
There are three unique species of golden monkey in China, namely Sichuan golden monkey, Yunnan golden monkey and Guizhou golden monkey. Among them, the Guizhou Golden Monkeys are the most scarce and narrowly distributed of the three endemic golden monkeys in China, living only in the Fanjing Mountain Nature Reserve in northeastern Guizhou Province. The shoulders of Guizhou golden monkey have white stripes, which look like epaulets from a distance. They are smaller in size than the Sichuan golden monkeys and tend to live in groups, feeding on the shoots and skins of a variety of plants, as well as flowers and fruit. They like to eat wherever they go, and basically change their place of activity once a day. The Guizhou golden monkeys live on an isolated island in the Fanjingshan Mountains, so they have a narrow range and their numbers are so small that they have been called the "only child of the world" by scientists.
Francois langur ( trachypithecus francoisi)
The Francois langur is also known as the “Elves on the Cliff”. They are small in size, with a small head and long, slender limbs and tail, which can exceed the length of their body. They have long, erect black hairs on the top of their heads, and a small tuft of white hair between their ears and the corners of their mouths, which resembles a beard. Their bodies are black throughout, with only the tip of their tails sometimes appearing a little white. In contrast, the young monkeys look different, with the newborn monkeys basically having the same orange hair as the rest of the species, slowly turning black until they are about a month old, and then becoming almost as black as adult Francois langur after six months. Because their image is very unique, if you are lucky enough to meet them, you will recognize these little guys who are also called "Wu Yuan".
Black-necked crane (Grus nigricollis)
The Black-necked Crane is the only crane species in the world that grows and breeds on the plateau. They breed on the Tibetan plateau and fly to the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau to overwinter. They look very similar in appearance to the red-crowned crane, except that the feathers on the back of the head and body of the red-crowned crane are white, while the black-necked crane has a black neck and a grey body. Because of their predominantly black and white plumage and the scarcity of their population, they are also known as the "Pandas in Birds". With their long, slender necks and legs, from a distance, flocks of black-necked cranes use their pointed beaks to search for food in shallow water with a distinctive elegance.
Red-tailed Knobby newt (Tylototriton kweichowensis)
The Red-tailed Knobby newt is a species of salamander endemic to China. Small in size, it usually moves at night, capturing insects or other small animals for food. They hide themselves during the day in damp and shady places such as caves, rock cavities, moss and tree roots, and will also go out when rainy weather arrives and there is more water on the surface. As an amphibian, they only enter the water more often during the breeding season and spend most of their time in the wet areas near the water.
