On November 28, 2025, the Panzhou–Xingyi High-Speed Railway officially opened. At dawn, the inaugural train departed from Xingyi toward Panzhou, its carriages clean and bright, the mountains unfurling outside the windows. Sitting by the window were Zhou Hongbin and Xu Jiyou, retired employees of the Chengdu Railway Bureau's Guiyang Service Section. Learning that Guizhou's last prefecture-level city had finally entered the high-speed rail era, the couple—who had just celebrated their golden wedding anniversary—insisted on riding the first train. For them, this journey was more than a ride, it felt like a meaningful closure to the decades they had devoted to China's railways.

In the winter of 1973, the roads in the Wumeng Mountains were frozen solid and the taps ran dry. Young Xu Jiyou held the hand of his new wife, Zhou Hongbin, as they made their way from the family quarters to the railway repair shop. They slipped more than once on the icy path. At one point, Zhou fell and accidentally pulled Xu down with her. They laughed, stood up in the biting wind, and kept walking.

It was just another ordinary morning in their long life on the railway.
Both came from families devoted to China’s railways. Zhou’s father left Harbin in 1955 to help build the Chengdu–Chongqing line. Xu’s father was transferred from Jinan to Guizhou in 1958 as part of the nationwide "Third Front" industrial campaign. That generation chose to root themselves in the mountains—and passed that commitment to their children.

Looking back, Zhou and Xu sum up their careers simply: “We watched the railway grow, step by step.” They lived through every transition—from steam to diesel to electric, and finally to high-speed trains. Tracks extended, speeds increased, and working conditions improved. "It feels like a dream," Zhou often says, recalling the changes they witnessed firsthand.
Their daughter, Yaya, later joined the railway as well. During her first Spring Festival travel rush, she worked through a fever, hoping to take sick leave. Her mother refused: "We worked for decades and never asked for leave." That day, Yaya unclogged a restroom while burning up, received porridge from grateful passengers, and found her name written in the "Passenger Message Book." Only then did she fully understand the quiet, persistent spirit that shaped her family.

More than ten years ago, Zhou and Xu visited Xingyi as tourists. Before high-speed trains, the trip from Guiyang took most of the day. They rushed from one place to another and returned home late at night, exhausted. Zhou remembers Xingyi was beautiful, but the details have faded. "It was too rushed, too tiring," she said.
As they sat aboard the inaugural Panzhou–Xingyi high-speed train, watching mountains and clouds glide swiftly past the window, what rose in their hearts was a quiet sense of fulfillment — the feeling that decades of perseverance had finally been answered by the times. The journey that once took more than half a day now takes just about two hours. For a couple who spent their whole lives working on the railway, such a change is not a "novelty," but a long-awaited "realization." It reflects the hopes generations of railway workers held for Guizhou's transportation, and the future they always believed the province would one day embrace. In the past, a trip to Xingyi meant rushing and exhaustion, now, they can finally sit back, take in the scenery, and simply enjoy the train as it weaves through the mountains.
“Guizhou has beautiful mountains, beautiful waters, and beautiful people. I hope people from all over the country — and the world — can come see our Guizhou,” Zhou Hongbin said. The new railway makes that wish more tangible. Wanfenglin, Wanfeng Lake, the Maling River Canyon—places once held back by difficult roads—are now opening up to the world along these tracks.

Trains and tracks have framed Zhou and Xu’s entire lives. The opening of the Panzhou–Xingyi High-Speed Railway is like a gentle light turned on in their later years—an affirmation that their decades of work helped carry Guizhou into a new era. For most people, high-speed rail means convenience. For them, it is the moment when a lifetime of dedication meets the kindness of progress.
”Proudly, they held their inaugural train tickets. Zhou carefully slipped hers into her bag. "This ticket is precious," she said. "We'll keep it forever—our family’s heirloom."
