Dongzhi or the Chinese Winter Solstice Festival falls on the shortest day and longest night of the year .

Historically, it is considered as one of the most important festivals in China. The old saying goes, "Dōngzhì dà rú nián", which means the winter solstice is as solemn as the new year.

Like most other Chinese festivals, Dongzhi is a time for families to get together and feast on an array of traditional delicacies.

In many places of China, people will choose to eat some mutton during Dongzhi. After the winter solstice, here comes the coldest day of the year. Mutton is a good winter nourishing ingredient. On the day of the winter solstice, to stew a pot of delicious and nourishing mutton soup, can not only add nutrition, but also resist severe cold.

Dumplings, as an enduring symbol of Dongzhi, originated in Northern China. Eating dumplings provided comfort since winters here were devastatingly harsh. People believed that the ear-like shape of dumplings would protect their ears from frostbite.

During Dongzhi, families in Southern China will typically gather together to make and eat tangyuan, because Tangyuan symbolize family togetherness. Tangyuan are small balls of glutinous rice flour which are filled with either sweet filings like black sesame or meat with spice, served in a bowl of either sweet soup or broth.

There are also many, many local traditions.

Cantonese people like to have a large family meal with roasted meats and preserved meats like char siu and lap cheung .

Cakes made with glutinous rice flour are also very popular. Many rice cakes (sweet or savory) end with "gao" in Mandarin, which means progress and advancement.

Wherever you may be celebrating Dongzhi, we wish you and your loved ones a warm Winter Solstice this year! While traditions vary region to region, the reunion over food remains a constant.
